Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers for booking, preparing, travelling and completing Seahaven maritime training courses.

Booking

Is accommodation included in the price?

No. The price you pay is just for the training. Seahaven does not provide accommodation, but keeps a list of suggested nearby options on the Accommodation & Travel page.

Preparation

What time does my course start?

Please check the latest Seahaven course timetable and your joining instructions before travel. The downloads page links to the course timetable resource.

What do I need to bring for the STCW or refresher course?

Come dressed comfortably for learning. Practical equipment is provided, but for Fire Fighting days wear leggings, tracksuit bottoms or shorts because denim is too restrictive under fire training kit. Bring swimwear, a t-shirt and a towel for the pool session.

Do I need my ENG1 before I do my course?

No. You do not need an ENG1 to do courses at Seahaven, but you will need your ENG1 before you start work. Do not schedule ENG1 medicals while you are training because you will not have time to attend.

My STCW is more than 5 years old. Can I still just do the refresher?

Yes. It does not matter if your STCW has expired unless you are working on a boat. If you are working on a boat, you must ensure your refresher courses are completed before the 5 years. Otherwise, you can refresh at your leisure.

Training day

Is food included?

No. The price you pay is just for training. Seahaven does not provide food, but tea, coffee and water are provided all day. Food vans visit the site, and there are supermarkets and takeaway options nearby.

Will there be a written exam for my STCW course?

Students are assessed in a variety of ways. Each module includes a multiple-choice test completed on a mobile phone. Seahaven can arrange help or extra time if told in advance.

Do I need to be able to swim for Personal Survival Techniques?

No. Pool activities are completed wearing a life jacket. Weak swimmers and non-swimmers should tell the instructor so they can be looked after properly.

Certification

Will I get a certificate at the end of the course?

Yes. For eligible MCA approved STCW courses, Seahaven states students leave with an approved, stamped, laminated and embossed certificate on Friday afternoon. You will need to take the certificate with you for working onboard a vessel.

Can I do a Crowd Management course at Seahaven?

Yes. Seahaven teaches the STCW Crowd Management for Passenger Ships and Safety Training for Personnel Providing Direct Service to Passengers in Passenger Spaces. You will need this course if you will be working on a cruise ship.

Travel

Is there car parking on site?

Yes. Parking is available just outside the centre. Drivers should use the McKinley Way entrance to Gate 4 rather than relying on the postcode alone.
